The two were sworn in during a ceremony at department headquarters on Friday.

WESTPORT, CT — The Westport Fire Department welcomed two new members to its ranks Friday, during a ceremony at fire headquarters on the Post Road for family, friends, local leaders and members of the department.

Chelsea Curreri, who grew up in Glastonbury, and Timothy Izzo, of Trumbull, were sworn in by First Selectman Jim Marpe, who praised the two, and the department as a whole, for their dedication to serve the public.

"The importance of your job cannot be overstated," Marpe said, stressing that emergency responders lean into potentially dangerous situations to save others.

During the ceremony, Curreri had her badge pinned on her from her mother, Barbara Curreri, while Izzo received his from his father, Joe.

In his remarks welcoming the two new firefighters, Westport Fire Chief Robert Yost echoed Marpe's sentiments.

"Along with our new firefighters Curreri and Izzo, fellow firefighters, law enforcement officers, and the brave men and women of our military, we are all first responders. We will be the first to respond to adversity with kindness, the first to extend a hand when our neighbor falls down, the first to show that we, too, don't walk away from someone in need. We run to them."
