WESTPORT, CT — Westport firefighters doused a house fire on Compo Road South on Tuesday afternoon, rescuing one pet in the process, according to fire officials.

Another pet died in the 1:30 p.m. fire, but no people were injured in the blaze.

"First arriving units were met with moderate to heavy fire conditions coming from the second floor of a residential building with two living units," wrote Assistant Fire Chief Matthew Cohen in a statement. "Units deployed two hose lines and searched for victims. All human occupants were out of the building. Firefighters located and rescued a family pet, unfortunately another pet was located deceased in the building."

Firefighters were already in the area dealing with a large tree that had fallen across the road, which took down power and utility lines. "This created an additional hazard to the scene," Cohen said.

The building was deemed uninhabitable, and residents were relocated to stay with family. One resident received assistance from the American Red Cross with relocation.
