Westport Firefighters Rescue Trapped, Injured Driver From I-95 Crash

Firefighters used the "jaws of life" hydraulic device to remove the injured driver from the car.

WESTPORT, CT — Firefighters used the "jaws of life" hydraulic device to extricate a trapped and injured driver in a crash on I-95 in Westport Friday night, according to Westport Assistant Fire Chief Brian Meadows.

The one-car crash occurred at about 8:20 p.m. on the northbound side between exits 17 and 18.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, they found the heavily damaged vehicle wedged under the guardrail, with the driver still trapped inside.

Using the special device, firefighters were able to pry open the vehicle and remove the driver in 12 minutes.

The driver was taken to an area hospital by Westport EMS; the person's condition was not disclosed.

The crash is under investigation by Connecticut State Police.
