WESTPORT LAWYER DAVID W. GRIFFIN TO CO-CHAIR AND PRESENT AT THE 2016 NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON DIVORCE

Mr. Griffin will address complexities in the valuation of venture capital/private equity funds and physician practices in divorce today.

WESTPORT, CT, April 19, 2016 – The Westport-based law firm of Rutkin, Oldham & Griffin LLC announced that David W. Griffin will speak at the 2016 AICPA/AAML National Conference on Divorce May 18-20 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Jointly presented by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, the National Conference on Divorce is the premier nationwide conference on advanced divorce law and valuation. Mr. Griffin has acted as national co-chair of the Conference during its planning stage over the past year.

Mr. Griffin will co-present two in-depth sessions on cutting-edge practices related to navigating the challenges and intricacies of valuing and dividing venture capital and private equity funds in today’s divorce proceedings, as well as insights into the valuation of physician practices. On health care, he will explore current trends in the determination of reasonable compensation for physicians and the ramifications of HIPAA in valuation exercises. On the private equity/venture capital side, he will discuss the technical differences, valuation and tax nuances of venture capital vs. private equity funds and compare how these interests are valued and distributed in litigation and settlement of cases in California’s Silicon Valley vs. New York’s Silicon Alley.

Mr. Griffin is a partner at Rutkin, Oldham & Griffin. For the past 27 years, he has dedicated his legal career to guiding clients through the maze of complex and high-stakes divorce. His practice includes the negotiation and litigation of all areas of divorce, including alimony, child support, property and asset division, child custody, relocation and post-judgment modifications and contempt.

Mr. Griffin is widely respected within his field for his command of sophisticated financial matters. He has extensive experience analyzing executive compensation structures, business valuation, and other hard-to-value income sources and assets. As a former general counsel of a large regional real estate development firm, Mr. Griffin also understands real property valuation. In addition, he has wide-ranging knowledge of and has lectured to international audiences on the implications of technology, Internet, social media and e-discovery in the divorce setting. His combined business and technology strengths benefit clients and set him apart from his peers.

Mr. Griffin is admitted to practice in Connecticut and the U.S. District Court, in the District of Connecticut. He is a Fellow in the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, chairs or is a member of several AAML national committees and serves on the Board of Managers of the Connecticut Chapter. Mr. Griffin is also a Fellow in the International Academy of Family Lawyers. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the Fairfield County Bar Association, the Greenwich Bar Association and the Connecticut Bar Association, where he is chair of the Family Law Section and serves on its Executive Committee.

Mr. Griffin is a former member and co-chair of the State of Connecticut’s Child Support Guidelines Commission and an instructor for the State’s Guardian Ad Litem Training Course. He serves on the Board of Editors of Connecticut Family Lawyer. Mr. Griffin donates his time serving as a special master at the Connecticut Regional Family Trial Docket, the high-conflict custody court established by the State to help families resolve their cases by agreement rather than by conflict. He is a former chairman of the Boards of Directors and Trustees of Waterbury Hospital, where he also served on several committees including the Executive Committee, Finance Committee and Audit Committee, and as secretary of the Network and Hospital Corporations.

Mr. Griffin has been selected for inclusion in “Best Lawyers in America” in the area of family law since 2013 and was identified as a “New England Best Lawyer” by The Wall Street Journal in 2015. He has been recognized as a “Connecticut Super Lawyer” in the area of family law since 2011. In addition, Mr. Griffin has been named to the list of “Ten Leaders in Matrimonial & Divorce Law in Connecticut” published by the Ten Leaders Cooperative since 2011, and has been selected as a “Top Lawyer in Connecticut” in family law by Connecticut Magazine since 2012. He regularly lectures and publishes articles about family law matters.

Mr. Griffin received his B.A. from Ithaca College in 1979 and his J.D. from the University of Houston Law Center in 1983. He practiced family law at the Waterbury-based law firm of Griffin, Griffin & Mayo, P.C. from 1998 until 2010, when he teamed up with partners Arnold H. Rutkin and Sarah Stark Oldham.
