The FCIAC has altered the scheduling format as teams will play a 16-game league schedule as opposed to 15.
Previously, teams did not play three FCIAC opponents every season. This year, Staples will only "miss" Stamford and Bassick, but that means the Wreckers have had to end their rivalry with Brookfield.
A number of Staples football players were recognized by ESPNHS for preseason honors, including junior defensive back Greg Strauss, who was named first team All-State after intercepting six passes as a sophomore lat year.
ESPNHS tabbed senior defensive lineman Bo Gibson, senior offensive lineman Jack Gibson, senior running back Jon Heil, junior running back Nick Kelly and junior defensive back Joe Zelkowitz.
Leading the offense will be sophomore quarterback Jack Massie, who took over in midseason last year when Chet Pajolek went down with a season-ending injury and started the Wreckers' state playoff game against Glastonbury.
Coming off a 9-2 season, the Wreckers are looking for their third consecutive appearance in the state playoffs. They play the first of three preseason scrimmages at Bunnell on Wednesday (4 p.m.)
