The men’s pair won its repechage, while the women’s quadruple sculls finished second in its semifinal to highlight the third day of racing at the 2011 World Rowing Junior Championships in Eton, Great Britain.

Building off a strong performance in Thursday's repechage, the women’s quadruple sculls crew of Nancy Miles (Bainbridge Island, Wash.), Lizzy Youngling (Westport), Erin Reelick (Brookfield)  and MacKenzi Sherman (Los Alamitos, Calif.) finished second in its semifinal to advance to Saturday's final.

The crew got off the line in fifth position but quickly worked its way back into third place at the 1,000-meter mark. The U.S. boat then passed Italy in the final 500 meters to claim second place. Germany led from start to finish with a winning time of 6:45.33. The U.S. clocked a 6:49.27, followed by Italy in a 6:50.85.

The crew will take on The Netherlands, Belarus, Romania, Germany and Italy in the final.

The U.S. men’s eight of coxswain Max Blumenthal (Oklahoma City, Okla.), Alex Perkins (Westport), Max Meyer-Bosse (Westport), Patrick Eble (Fort Washington, Pa.), Zach Hershberger (Los Gatos, Calif.), Harry Holroyd (Piedmont, Calif.), Stephen Podwojski (Cincinnati, Ohio), Greg Schneiter (Latham, N.Y.) and Hunter Leeming (Sarasota, Fla.) finished second in the repechage to secure a spot in Saturday's final.

The U.S. got off the line in third position before clocking the fastest second 500-meter split to move into second position behind Germany. The German crew led from start to finish, winning the race in a 5:44.76. The U.S. finished second in a 5:48.66. Spain and the Czech Republic also advanced. The four crews will join heat winners Great Britain and Italy in the final.

Rosie Grinalds (Southport) and Corinne Bozzini (Lafayette, Calif.) advanced to Saturday’s final in the women’s pair by finishing fourth in today’s repechage. With four crews to advance to the final, Romania, France, Germany and the U.S. established the top four positions during the first half of the race, with all four crossing the 1,000-meter mark within one second of each other.

In the third 500, Romania began to pull away from the rest of the field, while the other three crews battled it out for second position. Going into the final 500, the U.S. held a narrow margin on both Germany and France for second, but the French crew made a strong push over the final stretch of the race to take second. At the line, Romania won with a time of 7:38.35, with France finishing second in a 7:41.62. Germany finished third in a 7:43.16, with the U.S. finishing in a 7:44.25. The four crews will join heat winners Italy and Greece in the final.

In the first repechage of the men’s double sculls, Graham Anderson (Weston) and Charles Campbell (New Canaan) finished third, just missing a spot in the semifinals. The Czech Republic led the race from start to finish, clocking a 6:34.64.

With two crews advancing, the U.S. battled Mexico for second position through the 1,000-meter mark, with Poland lurking about one second behind. During the third 500, Poland chased down a slowing Mexico and the U.S. to take command of second place. Poland finished with a time of 6:41.26, while the U.S. crossed in a 6:43.63. The duo will now race Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Ukraine and Brazil in a C/D semifinal, which will determine the crews that will race in the C and D placement finals.

Racing continues on Saturday beginning at 10:00 a.m. local time with placement finals, semifinals and finals in six events. The U.S. will have crews racing for medals in the women’s four, women’s pair, women’s quadruple sculls and men’s eight. Sunday’s racing features finals in the men’s pair, women’s double sculls, men’s double sculls, men’s quadruple sculls, women’s single sculls, men’s single sculls and women’s eight.

John Collins of Wilton carded a 2-over par 72 to share medalist honors in the Metropolitan PGA Junior Tour's tournament at Silvermine Golf Club in Norwalk on Wednesday.

Collins, 16, who attends Trinity-Pawling in New York, shared top honors with Matt Malhke of Westchester, N.Y., in the 15-18 boys division. There was no playoff.

Among other area players, Redding's Robbie Frierson carded a 73 while Westport's Peter Richards signed for a 77. Norwalk's Henry Grillo shot a 92 and Westport's Matt Scherzler finished with a 94.
