Westport’s U-11 girls soccer team has been crowned joint state champions after a hard-fought Connecticut Cup final against Suffield ended in a 2-2 tie after two overtime periods.

Westport took an early lead in the game, which was declared a draw after two extra 10-minute periods.

"All the girls worked so hard and played very well,’’ coach Kristin Ryan said. "We are so proud of the girls.’’

The Connecticut Cup co-victory is the second success for Westport’s blue travel team. The 14-memeber squad was also the district champion in the fall season with no defeats.

It’s Ryan’s first year coaching Westport’s blue travel team. She is a physical education teacher at Bedford Middle School  and a former Westport Soccer Association player herself. (Travel soccer teams are classified blue, red and white, with blue being the most able).

The Westport team travelled to Curtiss Park in Simsbury for the Connecticut Cup game Saturdayafter beating Rocky Hill 4-3 the previous weekend.

The team's assistant coach was Heidi McGee and the manager was Debbie McWhirter.

-- Staples' right fielder Alex Masiello was named to the All-FCIAC softball first team. Caitlin Kane earned a spot on the second team.
