In a repeat of last season, Farmington ended the season for the Staples' boys soccer team Monday, defeating the Wreckers 1-0 in a Class LL second-round game at Tunxis Mead.

Last year, the teams met in the final with the Indians denying the Wreckers a 13th state championship with a 2-1 victory.

On Monday, the Indians got on the board midway through the first half and the Wreckers, who had trouble scoring all year, couldn't get the equalizer.

"This game was a microcosm of our season,” Staples coach Dan Woog told the team's website.  “Of our 21 games this season, 16 were decided by one goal, or were ties.  That’s the way our entire year went.  It’s a tribute to our guys that they gutted so many of those matches out –  and that they fought to the end in this one.

Farmington will face another FCIAC team in Wednesday's quarterfinal - No. 3 Norwalk, which ousted Westhill 4-1 on Monday. The Staples finished the year at 13-4-4.

“It’s always tough to lose – especially wearing the Staples ‘S'," Woog added. "But if your team is any good at all, odds are high you’ll end your season with a loss.  Only one team finishes as champion.  Yet we always set our goals high.  If you don’t shoot for the stars, you’ll never hit the moon.

“I loved this team. They’re an awesome group of young men.  They brought a smile to my face every day.  I consider myself very fortunate to have worked with them."

The Staples field hockey team dropped a 1-0 decision to top seed Cheshire on Monday in the quarterfinals of the Class L state tournament.

Anna Marcucilli scored with just over 18 minutes remaining in regulation for the Rams (20-1), who will take on Greenwich in the semifinals on Wednesday at a site to be determined. The Cardinals defeated Hamden 2-1 on Monday.

Chris Lueb had 17 saves to keep Staples, which was outshot 28-12, in the game.

The Wreckers, who won the FCIAC championship after ending Darien's 93-game unbeaten streak in the semifinals, finished the year at 12-4-3-1.

The Staples girls soccer team looks to continue its postseason run on Tuesday when the 20th-seeded Wreckers visit No. 5 seed Westhill in an all-FCIAC battle in the quarterfinals of the Class LL state tournament.

After just missing the FCIAC playoffs, the Wreckers ousted No. 13 seed New Milford 3-1 in the first round last Thursday. On Saturday, they pulled off a bigger shocker, ousting defending state champion Shelton 1-0 in a dramatic affair that went to four rounds of penalty kicks. (10-5-3). Staples eventually prevailed, 14-11.

Westhill (13-2-4), which lost in the quarterfinals of the FCIAC playoffs, is no stranger to postseason play, having reached the state finals in each of the last two years. The Vikings won the state championship in 2009 before falling to Shelton in last year's final.

Westhill has reached the quarterfinals with wins over Danbury (2-0) and Masuk (1-0).

In the regular-season meeting, the Vikings posted a 1-0 win over the Wreckers on Oct. 18.

The winner of Tuesday's contest will take on either top seed Glastonbury or No. 25 Ridgefield in the semifinals. Ridgefield already has upset two top-10 seeds, including reigning FCIAC champion Greenwich.

Five FCIAC teams have reached the round of eight as New Canaan and Trumbull will square off in another quarterfinal Tuesday. Cheshire and Newtown meet in the final quarterfinal.

The Staples girls volleyball team plays at third-seed Newtown on Tuesday (6 p.m.) in the quarterfinals of the Class LL state tournament.

The sixth-seeded Wreckers (18-3), who lost to Ridgefield in the FCIAC finals, advanced with a 3-1 (26-24, 22-25, 25-18, 25-17) victory over FCIAC rival New Canaan in the second round after receiving a bye in the first round.

Newtown, which also had a first-round bye, swept Norwich Free Academy on Saturday ((25-12, 25-21, 25-16).

The winner of Tuesday's match faces either No. 2 Cheshire or No. 10 Bristol Eastern in the semifinals on Thursday at Milford's Foran High at 5 or 7:30 p.m.
