By virtue of Thursday's 31-27 win over Greenwich in the FCIAC championship game, the Staples football team finished second in the Class LL rankings behind Xavier and will take on No. 7 seed and FCIAC rival Ridgefield (8-2) in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
The Staples-Ridgefield winner will face either Hall (9-1) or Newtown (8-2) in the semifinals.

New Canaan (9-1) also qualified in Class L after defeating Darien 42-21 for its ninth straight victory over the Blue Wave.

Since the quarterfinal game is set for Tuesday, the Wreckers (9-0) have only four days to get ready, but coach Marce Petroccio prefered not to think about that Thursday -- he was more excited about a nice Thanksgiving dinner.
"I'm going to eat as much turkey and lasagna and ham as I possibly can," he said. "I'm going to relax and enjoy this FCIAC championship."
The Wreckers rallied from a 27-17 deficit in the final seven minutes to win their sixth FCIAC championship as Jack Massie tossed a 16-yard TD pass to Peter Bonenfant with 1:21 remaining for the go-ahead score.
