Staples boys soccer coach Dan Woog told the team's website that his club played like "dead mice" early in Monday's contest at Greenwich.

Pieter Zenner scored two first-half goals for the Cardinals, but the Wreckers answered with the next three and rallied for a 3-2 victory to remain unbeaten.

Alex Tonsberg scored five minutes after Zenner's second goal to pull the Wreckers with 2-1. Late in the first half, Steve Smith scored on a free kick from 35 yards to pull Staples even.

Fifteen minutes into the second half, Dylan Hoy followed up his own rebound, giving the Wreckers a 3-2 lead.

Staples, which allowed two goals in a game for the second time this season, improved to 7-0-2 while Greenwich dropped to 5-2-2.

"We don’t want to make a habit of this,” Woog added.  “We don’t want to put ourselves in a 2-goal hole.  But it’s good to know we can keep our heads, focus on the task at head, and grind out three goals to win."

After a five-day break, the Staples girls soccer team responded with a 5-1 over Norwalk on Monday to snap a four-game winless streak (0-2-2).

After missing some early opportunities, the Wreckers cashed in midway through the first half when Turner Block followed up Abbey Lake's rebound to open the scoring.

Nursing a 1-0 lead at the intermission, Staples erupted for four goals in the second half. Block's header made it 2-0 just two minutes into the half and Lake scored in the 55th minute for a 3-0 lead, then tallied again for a 4-0 margin.

After Karolyn Collins got Norwalk on the board, the Bears were awarded a penalty kick, but Staples goalkeeper Jesse Ambrose made the save and Ryan Kirshner  completed the scoring for the Wreckers.

Staples improved to 4-3-2 heading into Friday's home game against Darien (4 p.m.).

There was little movement this weekend in the New Haven Registe media high school football top 10 poll with Xavier (4-0), Masuk (4-0) and Ansonia (3-0) holding on to the top three spots.

No. 4 Hand (4-0) and No. 5 New Canaan (4-0) flip-flopped with the Tigers climbing one spot and the Rams dropping one position. Last week, New Canaan rallied from an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat McMahon, 36-33.

New London (3-0) held on to the No. 6 spot, followed by Staples (3-0), which also was No. 7 last week, Windsor (4-0), Bunnell (4-0) and North Haven (4-0).

Four FCIAC teams also are receiving votes, headed by Darien (4-0) at No. 13. The other FCIAC teams receiving consideration are Greenwich (3-1), Norwalk (4-0) and Trumbull (2-1). Norwalk has a showdown this week at home against New Canaan.
