The Staples boys soccer team hosted Fairfield Warde Saturday in a rematch of last season's FCIAC championship, won by the Wreckers, 2-1.
While the Mustangs didn't win the rematch, the result was still an historic one. Warde played Staples to a scoreless tie, snapping a 33-game regular-season losing streak against the 27-time FCIAC champions.
The Mustangs gained only their third point ever against the Wreckers, who lead the all-time series 33-1-1. The first game in Staples' history was a loss to then-Fairfield Warde.
Saturday's tie left the Mustangs with a 6-3-1 record while Staples is 7-1-3. The Wreckers were shut out for the second straight game as they were coming off Thursday's 1-0 defeat to Darien, which now boasts the FCIAC's best record.
The Staples football team, which improved to 4-0 with Saturday's 31-12 win over Dabury, is third in the latest CIAC Class LL state rankings.
Staples trails only Conard (4-0) and Xavier (5-0), the state's top-ranked team. The only other unbeaten team in Class LL is Norwich Free Academy (4-0).
Fellow FCIAC member Ridgefield (4-1), which has won four in a row, has climbed to No. 6. Greenwich, which was eighth last week, slipped to 12th as it gained no advantage by beating winless Fairfield Ludlowe.
