Staples junior Henry Wynne won the individual title Monday in the FCIAC boys cross country championships at New Canaan's Waveny Park.
Wynne posted a time of 15:27 in the 3.1-mile race, finishing just two seconds ahead of Fairfield Warde's Harry Warnick, who also was runner-up for the second straight.
Staples finished third in the team with 71 points, placing three runners other runners in the top 20: No. 13 Mikolaj Kulis (16:42), No. 13 Patrick Nolan (17:01) and No. 15 Marcus Russi (17:04). Brad Payne was 34th.
The Staples girls finished seventh, led by No. 10 Caroline Koenig (15:30). Staples' other top five runners were: No. 23 Alex Popkin (16:08), No. 33 Carolina Smith (16:20), No. 37 Courtney Mulle (16:30) and No. 42 Paige Murray (16:48).
Darien's bid to unseat Danbury as FCIAC boys cross country champions fell just short Monday at New Canaan's Waveny Park.
The Hatters held off the Blue Wave by only four points to capture their seventh consecutive league crown. Darien defeated Danbury in a dual meet on Sept. 20 en route to a 17-0 regular-season finish.
Danbury's duo of senior Tom Moore (16:17) and junior Nick Carlsen(16:18) finished third and fourth. Overall, Danbury, which has claimed 10 of the last 11 FCIAC crowns, finished with 54 points.
Completing the top five was McMahon senior Chris Madaffari (16:20). Darien's top runners were Charlie Baird (16:31) and Mike Johnson (16:46), who were sixth and seventh.
In the girls race, Ridgefield won the team championship, even though the Tigers placed no one in the top five.
Sarah Guillaume and Caroline Carr were seventh and eighth for the Tigers, who won with a score of 56 points.
Greenwich, which featured individual champion Abigail Markowitz, finished second with 80 points. Last year's champion Wilton was third with 97 points.
Markowitz covered the 2.4-mile girls course in 14:55, defeating Westhill's Nicole Ambrosecchio by five seconds.
Completing the top five in the girls race were Wilton's Alosha Southern (15:07), Darien's Grace Loh (15:08) and Westhill's Claire Howlett (15:10).
Defending champion Heather Moriarty of Fairfield Ludlowe was 19th (15:55).
It's basically status quo in the New Haven Register high school football state poll as the top nine spots remained unchanged for the second straight week.
Staples (5-0) held on to the No. 7 spot after its 38-12 win over Trumbull while New Canaan (6-0) remained fifth after its 43-14 win over St. Joseph.
Xavier (6-0) tops the poll for the third straight week, followed by Masuk (6-0), Ansonia (6-0), Hand (6-0), New Canaan, New London (5-0), Staples, Windsor (6-0), Bunnell (6-0).
The only change is at No. 10, where Darien (6-0) replaced North Haven. Darien is coming off a 35-34 double overtime win against Wilton and plays at Staples on Saturday morning (10:30) in a battle of unbeatens.
