The Staples High School boys basketball team looked like world beaters against a Ridgefield squad that is suddenly struggling.
The Wreckers allowed just seven points in the first half en route to a stunning 60-34 win over the Tigers to stay in the FCIAC playoff mix.

Peter Rankowitz scored 23 points, including five 3-pointers, to pace Staples, which opened a mind-boggling 30-7 lead at the intermission.
James Frusciante added 12 points and Michael Argosh chipped in with 11 for the Wreckers, who improved to 9-9 overall and 8-8 in the FCIAC. Frusciante also had eight steals.

Kurt Steidl paced Ridgefield with just nine points. The Tigers, who were coming off a 47-45 overtime loss to Fairfield Ludlowe on Monday, dropped to 14-4 and 12-4.
Steidl was shut down Wednesday after scoring 31 points in the loss to Ludlowe.
Staples outscored Ridgefield 21-16 in the third quarter to extend its lead to 54-23.
Staples is in a five-way tie for ninth in the FCIAC standings with Danbury, Fairfield Ludlowe, Fairfield Warde and Trumbull, one game behind Bridgeport Central, Greenwich and Stamford, who are all at 9-7.

The Staples girls basketball team concluded its regular season Wednesday with a 72-59 win over Ridgefield.
The Wreckers finished with a 12-8 overall record and 11-7 in the FCIAC, good enough for a three-way tie for seventh with Stamford and Darien.
However, the Wreckers lost a tiebreaker to both. Stamford is the No. 7 seed and will play at No. 2 St. Joseph in the quarterfinals of the FCIAC playoffs while Darien is the No. 8 seed and will take on top seed and undefeated Danbury
on Saturday.
