The Staples High School boys basketball team likely was eliminated from the FCIAC playoff race following Monday's stunning 64-62 loss to McMahon.
The Senators improved to 4-15 overall and 4-13 in the FCIAC while the Wreckers dropped to 9-10 and 8-9 heading into Wednesday's regular-season finale at Bassick.

Staples is behind five teams who are tied for seventh in the FCIAC standings at 9-8 -- Bridgeport Central, Danbury, Greenwich, Fairfield Warde and Trumbull.
Peter Rankowitz scored 24 points and Michael Argosh added 16 for the Wreckers, who squandered a 28-14 lead after the first quarter and a 38-21 edge at halftime.

Staples still seemed to be in good shape with a 55-39 lead entering the final period, but the Senators turned around the game by outscoring the Wreckers 25-7 in a stunning final eight minutes.
Darkym Stroud scored 15 points and Jimmy Martinez added 14 for McMahon, which concludes its season on Wednesday against Bridgeport Central.

The Staples-Weston-Shelton boys hockey team kept its state tournament hopes alive Monday with a 6-0 victory over East Catholic.
The victory snapped a 10-game losing streak for the Wreckers, who improved to 7-11.
Riley MacDonald, playing in his second game since returning from an injury, recorded the shutout. Aaron Liu and Wyatt Fern also returned from injuries against East Catholic.
Staples, which was decimated by injuries following a 6-1 start, needs to win one of its final two games to make the state tournament.
Staples hosts Greenwich (3-16) on Wednesday and Cheshire on Saturday. Cheshire defeated Fairfield 2-0 on Monday.
East Catholic dropped to 5-10-1.
