The Staples-Weston-Shelton boys hockey team kept its state tournament hopes alive Monday with a 6-0 victory over East Catholic.

The victory snapped a 10-game losing streak for the Wreckers, who improved to 7-11.

Riley MacDonald, playing in his second game since returning from an injury, recorded the shutout. Aaron Liu and Wyatt Fern also returned from injuries against East Catholic.

Staples, which was decimated by injuries following a 6-1 start, needs to win one of its final two games to make the state tournament.

Staples hosts Greenwich (3-16) on Wednesday and Cheshire on Saturday. Cheshire defeated Fairfield 2-0 on Monday.

East Catholic dropped to 5-10-1.
