The Staples-Weston-Shelton boys hockey team clinched a state tournament berth a 5-3 win over Greenwich on Wednesday.
After starting 6-1, the Wreckers were decimated by injuries and lost 10 in a row, but they have won two straight to improve to 8-11 after getting some of their walking wounded back.

The Staples High School boys basketball concluded its regular season Wednesday with a 79-58 loss to Bassick.

James Frusciante scored 17 points and Michael Argosh added 14 for the Wreckers, who finished 9-11 overall and 8-10 in the FCIAC, missing out on the league playoffs.
Peter Rankowitz chipped in with 11 for Staples, which kept it close early, only trailing 39-35 at the intermission. But Bassick broke it open with a 24-10 spurt in the third quarter to take a commanding 63-45 lead into the final period.
Devin Coleman scored 18 points and Jerond Rogers added for Bassick, who finished 15-5 and 13-5. The Lions, who are the defending FCIAC champions, grabbed the No. 5 seed and will face No. 4 Westhill in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

The Staples girls basketball team (12-8) is seeded 20th in the Class LL state tournament and will play at will play at No. 13 Hall of Hartford (14-6) in the first round on Monday.
Should the Wreckers advance, they would take on either No. 4 Career Magnet or No. 29 Southington in the second round on Wednesday.
Career Magnet is the defending Class LL state champions.
