The girls basketball team pulled off an upset Monday, defeating No. 13 Hall 33-30 on the road in the first round of the Class LL state tournament.

Erica Stein scored 13 points for Staples while Jess Coelho contributed 12 and grabbed nine rebounds.

With the 20th-seeded Wreckers holding a 30-29 lead, Nikki Bukovsky hit two free throws with under 30 seconds remaining to clinch the victory. Freshman Madeline Schemel ripped down 13 rebounds for Staples.

With the victory, the Wreckers (13-8) advanced to the second round, where they will play at No. 4 seed Career Magnet on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Career Magnet, which is the defending Class LL state champion, advanced with a 60-35 victory over No. 29 Southington on Monday.
