After a critical win over Westhill, the girls basketball tea continues its pursuit of an FCIAC playoff spot on Tuesday when the Wreckers visit undefeated Danbury (7 p.m.).
Nikki Bukovsky scored 17 points in Friday's 42-40 victory over the Vikings. The triumph left Staples (10-6, 9-5 in a three-way tie for sixth in the FCIAC standings with Norwalk and Stamford.
However, the Wreckers are only one game ahead of Darien, Fairfield Warde and Westhill, who are all tied for ninth with 8-6 marks in league play.
Danbury (16-0, 14-0) is coming off a 53-38 victory over Fairfield Ludlowe. The Hatters and defending FCIAC champion Trumbull have clinched FCIAC playoff spots.
The Staples boys also have playoff aspirations, although they are currently not in playoff position following last Friday's 67-58 loss to Westhill.
Peter Rankowitz had a huge game against Westhill with 30 points and seven rebounds while Michael Argosh added 14 points for the Wreckers.
The Wreckers (7-7, 6-6) are in a four-way tie for 10th with Fairfield Warde, Stamford and Trumbull.
Staples is just one game out of a playoff spot, but the Wreckers face a tough test when they host the Hatters, who could be in an angry mood following Friday's surprising 61-57 loss to a four-win Fairfield Ludlowe team.
Staples is in the midst of a four-game homestand as it will host Trumbull on Friday and Greeenwich on next Monday.
Danbury (9-5, 7-5) has dropped two in a row as the Hatters previously suffered an 82-77 setback to Westhill.
