After pulling off an upset at Hall in the first round of the Class LL state tournament, the girls basketball team will need an even bigger one on Thursday when the Wreckers visit Career Magnet in a second-round contest (7 p.m.)
After Staples (13-8) defeated Hall 33-30 on Monday, Wreckers coach Ed Huydic suggested his team would be a 20-point underdog against Career, the No. 4 seed and defending Class LL state champion.

Following a disappointing finish to the regular season, the Staples High School boys basketball team is seeded 29th in the Class LL state tournament and will play at No. 4 Windsor in the first round on Thursday ( 7 p.m.).
The Wreckers dropped four of their last five to finish at 9-11 while Windsor went 19-1 and is ranked fourth in the New Haven Register's state media poll.
Should the Wreckers somehow pull off the upset, they would take on either No. 13 Hamden or No. 20 Glastonbury in the second round on Thursday.
Last season, Staples was seeded 12th and beat Amity in the first round 52-37 before losing to FCIAC rival Ridgefield in the second round, 67-48.
Windsor enters this postseason with something to prove after getting upset by Xavier in the second round a year ago as the top seed, 69-58.
