Whiz Kid: Baxter Stein

An interview with the Staples freshman sensation. He already plays on the varsity team.

Outside of tennis, what are some of your other hobbies?

Outside of tennis, I like to stay active. I enjoy running and playing basketball recreationally. I also enjoy playing all other racket sports. However, tennis and school consume the majority of my time.

I was about six when I started to take interest in the sport.

My favorite player to watch is the legendary Roger Federer. I would like to say that I emulate Fernando Verdasco because I like to dictate points with my forehand.

When did you first start to compete competitively?

I started getting serious about tennis at around ten, where I began to play USTA matches.

What's it like to be a freshman playing on a varsity team?

It is a real privilege to play on such a strong and supportive team. Tennis for me has been a primarily individual sport so it is a great experience being able to compete in a team setting. I am one of four freshmen on varsity who are all getting a chance to play and contribute to the team. The entire team, especially the seniors have been extremely supportive making it a fun and rewarding environment.

What do you love most about tennis?

Tennis is a fun and exciting sport. I think the best part about it is the competition and strategy.

Which different surfaces have you played on? Which one is your favorite? Why?

I have played on a variety of hard and clay surfaces and also have had the opportunity to play on grass. My favorite is the hard court surface like we have here at Staples. The fast pace of the courts really helps my game.

If you were to play a match against anyone in the world at any venue, who would you play and where?

I would play at Arthur Ashe stadium at the US Open against one of my all time favorite tennis players Andre Agassi.
