Woman Accused Of Refusing To Repay Cashed MoneyGram: Westport PD
The suspect "was afforded the opportunity to reimburse the victim," but did not, which resulted in her arrest, authorities said.
WESTPORT, CT — A 51-year-old Stratford woman was arrested this week on a warrant charging her with fifth-degree larceny, after Westport police said she cashed a $550 MoneyGram she found, but refused to pay back the Westport victim who lost the check.
Valentina Dimitia-Coatanroch was arrested Sunday in Stratford, and was turned over to Westport police.
In March 2020, a local resident told police that they had lost the MoneyGram, but when they called the institution seeking a replacement check, the company said that it had already been cashed.

"The investigating officer determined that Valentina Dimitia-Coatanroch found the MoneyGram on the ground, endorsed it using her real name and address, and deposited it into her bank account," said Westport Police Lt. Eric Woods in a statement. "Ms. Dimitia-Coatanroch was afforded the opportunity to reimburse the victim, but declined, and an arrest warrant was issued."
Dimitia-Coatanroch was released after posting a $1,000 bond, and is scheduled to appear in Stamford Superior Court on Feb. 6.
