WETHERSFIELD, CT — A nasty motor vehicle accident on the Berlin Turnpike in Wethersfield had caused traffic headaches and resulted in a utility pole being sheared in half and a lengthy road closure.

The crash, however, is now cleared according to the state Department of Transportation's Twitter feed, which said it was cleared just before 1 p.m. Wednesday.

According to the Wethersfield Police Department Wednesday morning, authorities received several "911" calls at about 7:35 a.m. reporting a crash on the Berlin Turnpike near Pawtucket Avenue.

Police said when officers arrived, they determined a single motor vehicle was going south on the turnpike and left the roadway, slamming into a utility pole.

This, according to police, essentially cut the pole in half, brought down power lines and resulted in a loss of power for part of the Berlin Turnpike.

Despite the violence of the accident, police said the operator only sustained minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Police said the low-hanging wires and power outage have prompted the closure of the Berling Turnpike south of Nott Street and Route 5/15 south from the Sileas Deane Highway.

Eversource Energy crews are currently on the scene, but added delays and road closures are expected during the course of the day, police said.

"The Wethersfield Police Department asks that the public avoid the area if possible and thanks the public for their patience," police wrote.
