Nonprofit Helps Wethersfield Man After Brain Surgery
Amy's Angels helped provide financial assistance to a Wethersfield man and his family following brain surgery.
From Eversource: When Jack Casey’s son, Jack Casey V, was diagnosed with a brain tumor at the age of 24, he was devastated. With the diagnosis came the fear and challenges of chemotherapy. The other big blow the family didn’t see coming—the healthcare costs.
“Our insurance wouldn’t cover a special type of radiation the doctors at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Massachusetts General Hospital had suggested. The cost would have been close to $200,000,” said Jack Casey. “My wife and I never imagined how expensive treatment could be. We opted for a common form of radiation the insurance covered.”
Since Jack Casey V’s brain surgery and treatment nearly four years ago, he experiences up to 25 migraines each month. His father questions if this would have been the outcome, had they chosen the special treatment.

“We decided to look for help financially so any decisions we all make going forward, would be solely based on the best option for his health,” said Jack Casey. “That’s when I was introduced to Bob Fiondella.”
What the Wethersfield family didn’t know at the time, was how much Bob would impact their lives.

Bob is the founder and president of Amy’s Angels. The Simsbury nonprofit’s mission is to provide short and long-term assistance to families or individuals suffering from an illness or a severe injury. Amy’s Angels helps people pay their rent, mortgages, medical bills, living expenses, and more.
“After meeting Jack, I knew that Amy’s Angels could help,” said Bob. “When I created this foundation, I didn’t want it to become a bureaucracy. You have to act quickly in a lot of these cases. These folks are in desperation. We’re helping hard-working people who have fallen on hard times with not only their health, but their finances.”
Amy’s Angels has helped with thousands of dollars’ worth of living expenses for Jack Casey’s family. Volunteers have also assisted with countless fundraisers, so the family could focus on Jack Casey V’s health. The organization is run by all volunteers, including Bob, and relies outside donations to help others. Eversource is humbled to have made a financial contribution to support Amy’s Angels and to help people like the Casey family.
“I’ve known Bob for quite a while and he really does have a true passion for people and their well-being,” said Eversource Community Relations Specialist Toni Berlandy. “I knew that Eversource could help with Amy’s Angels’ mission and we are so excited to work with Bob and his foundation for a better tomorrow.”
Bob started the foundation in 2014 after his cousin passed away from breast cancer the year before. What started out as a way to help pay her medical bills and provide for her young son, turned into something much bigger. More and more people have gotten involved, even the Casey family volunteers at fundraisers for other people in need. Since its inception Amy’s Angels has raised $1 million for families in need across the state.
“It’s really the people that make it all worth it to me,” said Bob. “We know we’re making a difference.”
