Services Scheduled for Former Wethersfield Police Chief
Chief William Knapp died on Sept. 1.

WETHERSFIELD, CT — Services for former Wethersfield Police Chief T. William “Chief” Knapp re scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday.
Knapp, 81, died Sept. 1.
Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday at 10 a.m. in First Church of Christ, 250 Main St., Wethersfield. Burial will immediately follow at Village Cemetery, Wethersfield.

Calling hours are slated for Wednesday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the D’Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Boulevard, Wethersfield.
Knapp was born in 1936 and graduated from of Wethersfield High School in 1954.

He entered the military a year later and served in the US Army’s 48th Infantry Scout Dog Platoon, 1st Infantry Division, for which he trained Army dogs.
He attended Hillyer College, the University of Hartford and the University of Virginia.
He became a Wethersfield Police officer in 1958 and served as chief from 1974 to 1989.
He graduated from the FBI National Academy in 1975. IN 1989, he was appointed by Gov. William O’Neill as executive director of the Police Officer Standards and Training Council of the the Connecticut Police Academy. While at the post, Knapp was instrumental in establishing the minimum standards for the employment and basic and in-service training of all police officers in the state.
He was reappointed to that position by Governors Weicker, Rowland and Rell.
Knapp he retired in 2003.
