WILTON, Conn. (Dec. 6, 2011) – The LaurelRock Company, a Wilton, Conn.-based landscape architecture design-build and maintenance firm, today announced that it received the Professional Landcare Network’s (PLANET) national Merit Award for the redesign-build of an expansive residential property in Weston, Conn. LaurelRock’s President and Co-founder Burt DeMarche accepted the honors at this year’s 42nd Annual Green Industry Conference and Awards Ceremony in Louisville, Kentucky, October 28th.
The firm took home the Merit Award for its remarkable transformation of a poorly conceptualized and implemented landscape surrounding a grand, newly constructed home. LaurelRock’s team of landscape architects and designers were challenged with greatly improving the builder’s overall approach to the property, both aesthetically and functionally, as well as resolving some problematic grading and drainage issues. To transform the property into an outdoor oasis worthy of the home’s grand scale, LaurelRock’s team integrated the property’s existing outdoor swimming pool and patio dining amenities with newly designed entertaining areas, gardens, walkways and stone architectural elements that would add a wow factor to first impressions and visual interest to the English Manse feel of the home.

To create intriguing patterns and visual interest, the team added new architectural pavers, stone curbing, walkways and a gated stone arch, inviting guests to the outdoor activity area in the rear of the house. New stone walls, planting beds, shrubs and perennial border plantings at the woods edge were installed to provide year-round interest and privacy, and to evoke the magical desire to explore beyond the property’s iron gate.
According to DeMarche, the extensive redesign and installation called for overcoming the negative visual impact and poor functionality of the existing pool, walkways and terraces. “This is not an uncommon problem to encounter with new construction. In the end, the design team created a harmonious design plan that tied the functions of existing elements together in a logical and pleasing manner with great visual impact. The homeowners, who are outdoor living enthusiasts, now have a place to relax and enjoy the great outdoors with friends and family.”
