Artist’s “Edge of Existence” opens at Wilton Library September 9

Norwalk artist Mark Schiff takes his work and viewers to the “Edge of Existence,” when his art exhibition opens Friday, September 9 at Wilton Library, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. His collection of watercolors, oils and acrylics reflect his desire to continuously experiment with different brushes, paints, media, surfaces and temperatures thereby creating his own unique style. Close to 40 of his large scale abstract works will be featured in a dazzling display of color and vibrancy lighting up the library’s walls. The reception is free and open to the public.

Mark’s fascination with painting began 20 years ago while on a backroads bicycling tour in California wine country where guides took him to an artist’s studio. He was almost immediately hooked by the artist painting with a wash of watercolor. The artist, Barbara Nechis, became one of his many teachers over the years as he went on to study with Phyllis Rutigliano of New Jersey, the aforementioned Nechis, Skip Lawrence and at the Silvermine Arts Center. At the Westport Arts Festival in 2011, he was awarded Best in Category for watercolors. He is a sustaining associate member of the American Watercolor Society and a member of the Silvermine Arts Center.

According to the artist, “I love painting with watercolor and acrylic. Many say watercolors are a difficult medium to use because of the spontaneous effects when the paint bleeds and spreads across the surface. I feel that this is the beauty of the medium and the mystery. It reminds me of the unpredictability of life. Acrylics and oils drive me to paint in multiple layers adding textures and interest. I use various brushes, paints, surfaces and media. My art is a voice to society reflecting the complex existence of randomness and beauty.”

The majority of works will be available for purchase with the proceeds benefiting the library. The exhibition runs through Friday, October 7. Library hours are Mondays through Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Fridays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays, 1 to 5 p.m. (beginning September 11).
