Girls and their families are invited to witness democracy in action as candidates from Bethel, Danbury, Hamden, Norwalk, Redding, Ridgefield, Westport, Wilton, and Woodbridge are elected as Ms President US of their towns. From 1:00-2:30 PM, the Clune Center will transform into a vibrant election space where girls can: Watch candidates deliver campaign speeches Hear from community and government representatives Participate in a real voting process Election winners will be announced at approximately 2:15 PM, followed by a celebratory cupcake reception for all attendees.

Food has long carried political meaning, and its significance in revolutionary America is no exception. Join art and culinary historian Nancy Siegel for a lecture and historic food tasting which investigates a distinct genre of culinary-inspired satirical prints produced by artists sympathetic to the plight of American colonists. Imagine King George III placing a fleet of ships in an oven about to be baked like gingerbread, the Prince of Wales gorging himself on the fortunes of Empire, the American colonies represented as a kettle of fish, exploding teapots—visual metaphors that spoke to the conditions and events that eventually dismantled the British Empire: non-importation movements in the American colonies, complex trade embargoes, protests over taxation, the anti-saccharite movement that called for boycotts of sugar from the West Indies produced by enslaved laborers, and—ultimately—Revolution.

About Nancy Siegel

Nancy Siegel is Assistant Dean and Professor of Art History &amp; Culinary History at Towson University where she specializes in American landscape studies, underrepresented women artists of the 19th century, print culture, and culinary history of the 18th and 19th centuries. She provides historical cooking demonstrations, tastings, and lectures widely on landscape and food histories
in addition to serving as an art and culinary consultant for museums and non-profit institutions. This lecture is based upon her forthcoming book, Political Appetites: The Power of Food in Revolutionary America (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2026) available now for preorders and the documentary Feeding the Revolution (WMHT).

The talk will be held on Sunday, April 26th, at 2:00 p.m. at the Wilton Historical Society.
Admission is $25 non-members, $15 for members of the Wilton Historical Society.

Prominent historical figures contributed to the formation of the new country, while Connecticut earned the nickname “the provision state” because of its supplies of food and ammunition to the Continental Army.



Military actions in Danbury, Ridgefield, Saugatuck, Groton, New London, New Haven, Greenwich, Norwalk, and Fairfield were significant.

Roger Sherman, Israel Putnam, Jonathan Trumbull, Benedict Arnold, Noah Webster, and others played critical roles, while other notable figures visited the state during the Revolutionary War years: George Washington, French General Rochambeau, John Hancock, and more.

The Connecticut Compromise broke a stalemate in the Continental Congress and allowed progress to continue forming the Constitution.

Noted storyteller and journalist Mike Allen, former host of the popular podcast Amazing Tales About History, will walk through the key people and events in Connecticut during our nation’s tumultuous march to independence, 250 years ago.

The talk will be held on Thursday, April 30, at 7:00 p.m. at the Wilton Historical Society at 224 Danbury Road in Wilton.
The event is free for Historical Society members. For non-members, there is a $10.00 fee.

UConn Extension, in partnership with the New Canaan Conservation Commission, is offering reduced-cost well water testing for residents of Fairfield County and surrounding areas. <a href="https://www.ctpublic.org/news/2024-07-18/rural-towns-in-ct-arent-testing-their-well-water-enough-this-program-is-trying-to-change-that" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Even if your water looks and tastes fine, it may not be safe to drink.</a>
A comprehensive well water test, normally valued at $350, is available for $235 (cash or check). Tests include coliform bacteria, lead, arsenic, uranium, nitrates, sodium, chloride, fluoride, pH, hardness, sulfate, turbidity, iron, and manganese.
