Danbury Hospital Surgeon Recognized for Excellence, Compassion and Leadership

Dr. Kenneth Hassler, a cardiothoracic surgeon specializing in advanced aortic surgery at Danbury Hospital, has been nominated for the Dr. Melville G. Magida Award, an annual recognition presented by the Fairfield County Medical Association to an outstanding young physician who embodies the spirit and ideals of Dr. Magida through clinical excellence, compassion, integrity, and dedication to patients and the medical profession.

Since joining Danbury Hospital in 2024, Dr. Hassler has helped transform care for patients with complex aortic disease by establishing a comprehensive Aortic Center and introducing advanced procedures typically available only at major academic medical centers. Within its first year, the program evaluated and treated more than 100 patients, expanding access to specialized cardiovascular care for patients throughout western Connecticut and the surrounding region.

“Dr. Hassler’s work demonstrates the powerful impact that innovation and compassion can have when they come together in medicine,” said John Brannelly, Executive Director of the Fairfield County Medical Association. “By bringing advanced cardiovascular care closer to home, he has expanded access to highly specialized treatment while maintaining the personal connection and trust that are at the heart of exceptional healthcare.”

Colleagues describe Dr. Hassler as an exceptional surgeon whose technical expertise is matched by humility, compassion, and a commitment to treating every patient with dignity and respect. While bringing cutting-edge aortic surgery to western Connecticut, he has remained focused on understanding each patient’s individual concerns and providing thoughtful, personalized care.

Before joining Danbury Hospital, Dr. Hassler completed cardiothoracic surgery training at the Mayo Clinic and an advanced aortic surgery fellowship at the University of Michigan. His academic and clinical work has included extensive research, national presentations, and numerous peer-reviewed publications focused on advancing the treatment of aortic disease and improving outcomes in cardiovascular surgery.

In presenting Dr. Hassler’s nomination, Hal Wasserman, MD, Chief of Cardiology at Danbury Hospital, highlighted his ability to connect with patients while delivering highly specialized care. Dr. Wasserman said Dr. Hassler “never loses sight of the person behind the diagnosis,” noting that patients trust him “not just because of his technical skill, but because they know he genuinely cares.”

Dr. Wasserman also praised Dr. Hassler’s leadership and the impact he has had on his colleagues. “Perhaps the most meaningful measure of leadership is the way someone makes the people around them better, and Ken does that every day,” he said.

The Dr. Melville G. Magida Award honors an outstanding young physician who embodies the qualities that defined Dr. Magida’s life and career. Dr. Hassler will be recognized as Danbury Hospital's 2026 nominee at the Fairfield County Medical Association's Annual Dinner Meeting on October 8, 2026, at The Patterson Club in Fairfield.
