Festival of Languages at Wilton High School
WHS is hosting the Festival of Languages, a school-wide celebration of world languages, cultures, and diversity, from March 22-24.
The Department of World Languages at Wilton High School is hosting the Festival of Languages, a school-wide celebration of world languages, cultures, and diversity, from March 22-24. The Festival has been a tradition at WHS for 30 years. The objective is to enrich the curriculum by bringing together the school community to celebrate the world’s cultures and languages. The planning committee, which has been organizing the event since October, is comprised of students and faculty. Señor Scott Webster and Señora Lauren Kantor, Spanish teachers, have been working with student leaders Izzy Meltzer, Hayley Meyer and Aqueelah Muhammad.This year’s Festival will feature nearly 30 events like German folk dancing, a presentation by the Model Congress club and a classical Greek and Roman trivia contest. The ever popular World Language Talent Show headlines the Festival brimming with song, music, and language. There will also be craft workshops like making traditional Spanish Day of the Dead masks and French Mardi Gras masks. Events such as Meditation with Tibetan Singing Bowls and a discussion of My Body, My Rights by the Amnesty International Club highlight the importance of reaching beyond the WHS community.
The committee has worked closely with other departments like English and Social Studies to design events that connect across disciplines. The majority of events are student-run and several outside professionals will be invited as well such as Shakespeare on the Sound's presentation of A Midsummer Night's Dream, sponsored by the Wilton High School PTSA.The hallways of Wilton High School will be infused with a sense of excitement and festivity that emphasizes open-mindedness and a global outlook. The excitement of this Festival is pervasive throughout the school, with at least one event offered every period of each day. With interludes of cultural music over the loudspeaker in between classes, the Festival committee hopes to ensure that the international celebratory spirit reaches all students and staff!
