Fresh from Giving Day Victory, Music on the Hill Brings Luck o' the Irish to Wilton

Music on the Hill celebrates St. Patrick's Day and a Giving Day prize with a concert of Irish music for chorus and handbells.

Music on the Hill, which took a 2nd place prize in last Thursday’s Giving Day sponsored by the Fairfield County Community Foundation, feels lucky indeed as it looks forward to its “Luck o’ the Irish” concert, to be performed on Sunday, March 15, at 3:00 p.m. The concert will be held in the Parish Hall at the Wilton Episcopal and Presbyterian Church complex (WEPCO), 48 New Canaan Road, Wilton.

The concert of the Festival Chorus and Jubilate Ringers handbell choir will feature traditional Irish songs of love and longing; a lively “Kerry Dance;” and a wordless “Londonderry Air.” Also featured: choral settings of poetry by W.B. Yeats. Artistic Director Ellen Dickinson conducts the chorus.

The ringers will perform a suite of Irish dances arranged for handbells by Artistic Director David H. Connell. His “Give Us a Dance Then” includes the jigs, reels and waltzes of a traditional Irish ceili, or dance party, complete with bell effects evoking the piper’s drone and dancers’ clogs. The group will also premiere “The Heart’s Content,” Dr. Connell’s composition for 4-octave hand chimes.  Dr. Connell conducts the ringers.
