Hanging Baskets Return to Wilton Center!

Community Efforts Successful

If you were riding around Wilton Center this past Monday, you are likely to have witnessed a happy sight and one that certainly signals that summer is not that far away. The hanging baskets on Town Center lampposts are back! One hundred and ten baskets were hung on Monday on 54 lampposts and 2 on either side of the Entrance sign at Merwin Meadows.

During our cold, snowy winter, a group of concerned citizens headed by Wilton resident Kelly Lash joined forces with the Wilton Garden Club on a fundraising mission to bring the baskets back. Ms. Lash who grew up in town and later returned here to raise her family had been disheartened when they did not go up last summer and shared her dismay with the Garden Club. They had been missed by many last summer, so residents said “what if” and ”why not” do this? And do it they did! Over 120 donations came in from individuals and businesses in town for this project, aptly named Make Wilton Beautiful!Wilton Garden Club President Suzanne Knutson remarked, “It’s heartening to see the sheer number of people who made donations. People DO care about the town’s appearance!”

All of this could not have been accomplished without the support of the grounds crew at the Parks and Recreation Department, who hung the baskets on Monday and will continue watering them this summer. The Wilton Chamber of Commerce has also been supportive both financially and in garnering business support from the community’s merchants. Donations from residents, no matter how small, are greatly appreciated and will be acknowledged.

Donations are still needed so that in coming years to ensure Make Wilton Beautiful! efforts can continue without interruption. This year the order was placed late in the growing season, so the flowers did not have a chance to bloom before being delivered.

Tax-deductible donations by check payable to the Wilton Garden Club should be mailed to P.O. Box 121, Wilton, CT 06897. Donations can also be made by credit card at www.wiltongardenclub.org.
