Luck o' the Irish Comes to Wilton

Music on the Hill honors St. Patrick's Day with a concert of Irish music featuring the Festival Chorus and Jubilate Ringers handbell choir,

Unleash your inner Irish by joining Music on the Hill for “Luck o’ the Irish,” a concert to be performed by the Festival Chorus and Jubilate Ringers handbell choir, with Artistic Directors David H. Connell and Ellen Dickinson, Conductors.

The concert takes place on Sunday, March 15, at 3:00 p.m. in Parish Hall at Wilton Episcopal and Presbyterian Church Complex (WEPCO), 48 New Canaan Road, Wilton.

The Jubilate Ringers will perform Dr. Connell’s “Give Us a Dance Then,” a suite of Irish dances arranged for handbells, which the group premiered last March. The suite includes the jigs, reels, and waltzes of a traditional Irish ceili, or dance party, complete with bell effects evoking the piper’s drone and dancers’ clogs.

The Festival Chorus will sing traditional Irish songs of love and longing (“Carrickfergus” and “’Tis the Last Rose of Summer” as arranged for the King’s Singers); a lively “Kerry Dance;” and a wordless “Londonderry Air.” Other selections include choral settings of the poetry of W.B. Yeats.

Tickets: $20 in advance at www.musiconthehillCT.org; $25 at the door. Children and students, free.

Think Spring!

Handbell ringers inspired by the Irish concert are invited to join Music on the Hill for a Spring Ring on Saturday, April 25, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at WEPCO. Read through new music hot off the presses. No performance, no pressure; just fun with bells and the people who ring them.

(Never touched a bell before, but tempted? Watch for a fall Handbell Workshop) with tracks for beginners and advanced ringers.)

On May 1, the professional-level Chamber Chorus will perform “Shakespeare at the Library,” at the Pequot Library in Southport, to be exact. Join Music on the Hill for a May Day celebration featuring a choral ensemble known for its impeccable performance, a bard whose words have rung across the centuries, in a space worthy of both.

“O Wind, if Winter comes, can Spring be far behind?” (Not Shakespeare, but apt.)
