New Details in Coyote Vs. Dog Encounter on Norwalk River Valley Trail

Police responded to a fight between a dog and a coyote which prompted them to close the trail temporarily.

WILTON, CT — The Norwalk River Valley Trail's Wilton loop has been re-opened following a fight between a dog and coyote Saturday which prompted police to close the trail, the Wilton Police Department announced Tuesday morning. The incident occurred at about 2:30 p.m. south of Sharp Hill Road, and contrary to initial reports, the dog was not injured during the encounter.

The trail had been closed since Saturday.

"The Wilton Police Department thanks the NRVT representatives for working closely with our Animal Control officers to ensure safe trail usage for all users and their pets," wrote the department. To sign up for Wilton breaking news alerts and more, click here.

Police directed residents to the state's Department of Energy and Environmental Protection for facts about coyotes. Police said at the time that the involved dog broke free of its owner upon seeing the coyote.

"The involved dog was leashed, however, broke free of its owner upon observation of the coyote," wrote Wilton police in a statement.
