I had the pleasure of attending the Danbury Chamber of Commerce “Conversations with Extraordinary Women” event. Four amazing women of different backgrounds were panelists. The focus of the conversation was about equality.
I left the corporate world in 2000, having spent my first career climbing the ladder. There weren’t many women in the companies I worked for, and certainly even fewer in high level positions and Boards. It was often a struggle to be able to express a point of view in a strong way, without being called a b****. Yet in looking back 40 years, we have come a long way, baby. I want to continue to help us come further.
When I left the corporate for-profit world, I began doing non-profit work. My current focus is on bringing Positive Discipline to homes, schools and communities around the world. Positive Discipline is fundamentally based upon the work of Alfred Adler, an Austrian psychiatrist of the early 20th century. Adler believed the behavior of human beings was based upon their desire to better themselves in life and that all human beings are equal, worthy of dignity and respect. He valued a sense of community and taught that the most basic need of people was to feel a sense of belonging to a group and a sense that they were capable of contributing to the well-being of the group. Positive Discipline is in homes, schools and communities in over 50 countries, and growing rapidly.

One of the things that really struck me during the conversation with these extraordinary women is that Positive Discipline is all about equality and mutual respect. We are trying to help adults shift how they are with children (and each other), so we all can treat each other with dignity. I truly believe that this work will help raise children who are more accepting of all differences. We can continue the shift in mindset.
Please join me in raising children who are raised to be independent, resilient, and treat others with mutual respect and dignity.
