Summer Theatre of New Canaan's Theater Education Programs
Performing Arts Camps at Summer Theatre of New Canaan for Middle School, High School and Special Needs Students! Registration now open!
The Summer Theatre of New Canaan, now in its 12th season of presenting acclaimed professional theatre at Waveny Park in New Canaan, offers three quality theatre education programs for students. All programs are taught by working professional theatre artists (actors, directors, choreographers, creative designers) from Broadway and across the country.
“Our goal is to introduce students to multiple styles theatre arts, give students the opportunity to discover their creative selves, give them the tools that help them become theatre artists and hone their talents.” explains, Artistic Director, Melody Meitrott Libonati, a Broadway actress and Director of the Performing Arts Conservatory in New Canaan which hosts the Summer Theatre each season. “Our theatre professionals all give the students an amazing opportunity to grow, learn and have a great creative summer experience.”
Middle school age students can register for the Junior Company, a three-week performance program that presents a fully produced production of Legally Blonde, Jr. The program runs afternoons, Monday through Friday, July 6 through July 24 and culminates with a public performance on the Summer Theatre’s main stage tent theatre at Waveny Park on July 24.

High School students who are considering a career in theater in college can attend a three-week Pre-College Theatre Intensive with daily master classes and workshops. Program runs Monday through Friday 10am – 4pm, June 29 though July 11. Workshops and classes explore and teach skills in acting, Shakespeare, improvisation, musical theatre vocal performance, commedia dell’arte, stage combat, theatre dance, yoga, sensory work, puppetry as well as lighting, costuming and other theatre disciplines. Students attend a Broadway show with back stage tour by one of the instructors.
For children with special needs ages 8 – 18, the Summer Theatre offers a unique acting and mentoring program called The DramaRamas. Each child is paired with one of the theatre company’s actors during rehearsals and performance. The children all perform leading roles in a special production of Legally Blonde, Jr. presented to the public. Program is in June with specific rehearsal dates, with a performance on the Summer Theatre’s main stage tent theatre at Waveny Park, New Canaan on June 24.

The Summer Theatre of New Canaan is a non-profit professional theatre company that presents quality musical theatre and Theatre for Young Audience shows mid-June through early August at Waveny Park in New Canaan, CT. It also presents new works by new and established theatre artists as well as educational programs for college, high school, middle school and special needs students. All performances are held in the Summer Theater’s state-of the art open-air tent theater – rain or shine - located in Waveny Park, adjacent to New Canaan High School Dunning Field.
