In the 16th year of collaboration between Wilton Library and Wilton Historical Society, the scholarly lecture series will focus on the theme of “A Rocky Road: The Struggle for Rights in America.” During this program, Dr. Camesha Scruggs, Professor of History at Central Connecticut State University, will discuss the role of children and domestic workers as change agents in the Civil Rights Movement which in popular memory focuses on individuals such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks. However, children are an integral part of the movement. From participants in school desegregation efforts to domestic workers’ contributions to local boycotts, we see their roles are vital to advancing the cause of civil rights. Dr. Camesha Scruggs is a recent PhD recipient in history from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. A native Texan, she received a BA and MA in history from Texas Southern University. Her research fields are 20th century US, African American Public History and Gender and Empire. She serves on the executive boards of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History and the National Collaborative for Women' History Sites. She performs volunteer work for various community preservation initiatives, bringing stories to broader audiences. Her current project examines the lived experiences of Texas African-American women domestic servants in the early 20th century and how interventions from social, civic, government, and higher education institutions impact the occupation. Tuesday, February 7 Poetry Discussion with Janet Krauss: The Poetry of Theodore Roethke (Zoom), 10:30 a.m. to noon. Please join us online as Janet Krauss leads a discussion of a selection of poems by Theodore Roethke. A readings packet will be emailed in advance of the program. In his relatively short life, Theodore Roethke, a deeply troubled man, wrote poems to help himself cope with his bi-polar condition and to help other poets pursue their “inner selves.” He was a beloved professor of poetry at the University of Michigan, his alma mater. Some of his students, Richard Hugo and James Wright, became established poets. When Roethke was fourteen, his father died of cancer. The boy blamed himself for his father’s death because of their difficult relationship. However, Roethke learned to “go by feeling where he has to go” as he wrote in “The Waking.” His book of poetry The Waking won the Pulitzer Prize in 1954. We will accompany him on his journey. Janet Krauss, who has two books of poetry published, “Borrowed Scenery,” Yuganta Press, and “Through the Trees of Autumn,” Spartina Press, has recently retired from teaching English at Fairfield University. Advance registration required. Register online in order to receive the Zoom session invitation link and readings packet. Please email Michael Bellacosa at mbellacosa@wiltonlibrary.org with any questions. To register and see more details, visit www.wiltonlibrary.org. Tuesday, February 7 Author Talk: Rebecca Hendrickson – Lessons from the Mountain, 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wilton author Rebecca Hendrickson’s debut novel, Lessons from the Mountain, exposes the challenges in the education and mental health systems. Ever since the family reunion in the Adirondack Mountains two years ago, nothing has been the same. Annie, the middle sister is experiencing an acute episode of postpartum depression. The youngest sister, Cade, has moved south to work at a school that resembles a trailer park, determined to succeed on her own adventure. Rye is a former teacher of the year, working in a wealthy, litigious school district who is always put together and organized until her father begins to deteriorate. Winnie' husband, Don, has become suddenly ill, both mentally and physically, and no doctor can explain. The family must watch Don' health decline while dealing with struggles of their own. Readers will also find themselves rooting for each character as they search for answers. Rebecca Hendrickson is a special education teacher at an alternative high school in Fairfield County. She previously published The Four Trimesters: Poems Highlighting the Joys of Motherhood. She and her husband and two children live in Wilton. elmstreetbooks.com will be selling copies after the talk. Tuesday, February 28 Senior Center Book Discussion: Brave New World, 11 a.m. to noon. Please join us as Bob Marafioti leads a discussion of Aldous Huxley' Brave New World. Having visited Edward Bellamy’s socialist utopia and having learned how the internet is rewiring our brains, we now turn to one of the greatest dystopias ever described: that of Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World. It’s got genetic engineering, pharmaceutically induced oblivion, social indoctrination, and mass entertainment/distraction. But, wait, there’s more. It’s also the story of a so-called “primitive” man who rebels against the new world order run by Mustapha Mond and his merry band of technocratic elites. The Wall Street Journal called it a “masterpiece….one of the most prophetic dystopian works of the 20th century.” And Tufts Professor Martin Green wrote that it is “as sparkling, as provocative, as brilliant…as the day it was published.” This group meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month from September through May, excluding December. Call the Senior Center for details and to register at 203-834- 6240. Comstock Community Center, 180 School Road, Wilton.
