Now through Sunday, August 28 Oceans of Possibilities: Wilton Library Children’s Summer Reading Club 2022 Join our Children's Summer Reading Club, open to all kids through rising grade 6. Once again, we are doing Read and Bead. Children will sign up through our website at wiltonlibrary.beanstack.org or download the Beanstack app and choose Wilton Library (CT) to register. Keep track of the time you spend reading and then log the number of minutes in Beanstack. For every 100 minutes, you will receive a brag tag and beads or a book. All reading counts: books, magazines, graphic novels, audiobooks – anything you want to read. So join us this summer and get reading! Now through Sunday, August 28 Oceans of Possibilities: Wilton Library Teen Summer Reading Club 2022 Starting June 21 through August 28, read and win prizes! Our Teen Summer Reading Club is for rising 6-12 graders. The goal? If you complete the challenge of reading 600 minutes over the course of the summer, you'll win a bag of candy! Each participant will also be automatically entered into weekly prize drawings for the first eight weeks of the program. The more reading you log, the greater your chances are at winning. Prizes include gift cards, wireless headphones, and a Bluetooth speaker. Now through Monday, August 29 The Annual Summer Show Art Exhibition at Wilton Library The 76th Annual Summer Show Art Exhibition showcasing the talents of Wilton adult artists. Exhibition runs through August 29. A majority of the works will be available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the library. Monday, August 1 Make Your Own Slime!, 4 to 5 p.m. Science has never been so much fun. Concoct your own non-Newtonian fluid with our safe recipes. Wear expendable clothes. Tuesday, August 2 Poetry Discussion with Janet Krauss: The Poetry of Elizabeth Bishop (Zoom), 10:30 a.m. to noon. Please join us online as Janet Krauss leads a discussion of a selection of poems by Elizabeth Bishop. A readings packet will be emailed in advance of the program. Bishop remains unique as a poet who both painted village scenes and then probed them as a poet with the precision of her words as she connected with seen and unseen people she imagined or actually knew. Bishop gained well deserved respect and appreciation as one of our important American poets after her books were published and after her death in 1979. She received the Pulitzer Prize in 1955. Janet Krauss, who has two books of poetry published, “Borrowed Scenery,” Yuganta Press, and “Through the Trees of Autumn,” Spartina Press, has recently retired from teaching English at Fairfield University. Tuesdays, August 2 & 9 Narwhals, Whales and Ocean Tales, 4:15 to 4:45 p.m. Children ages 4-5 are invited to a summer story time adventure! We will explore and chat about different exciting topics. There will be stories, songs, and some activities. No registration is required. Caregivers must remain on library property. Wednesday, August 3 Gazebo Story Time at the Farmer's Market, 2 to 2:30 p.m. Join us once a month at the farmer's market for a fun family story time inside the gazebo. Children ages 2 and up and their caregivers will enjoy stories, rhymes, and songs. Fun for the whole family! No registration required. In case of inclement weather, the story time will move into the Story Room in the Children's Library. When in the library, masks are recommended for all participants over 2 years old. Thursdays, August 4, 11, 18 & 25 Team STEAM Presents Engineering Fun, 4 to 5 p.m. Kids entering grades K-4 can join Wilton Middle School Students' Team STEAM, as they teach little engineers the basics of the engineering design process in a fun, creative, and hands-on manner! Each session will tackle a different engineering-related problem and discuss what it takes to be an engineer. Fridays, August 5 & 19 Children's Garden Club, 4 to 5 p.m. Do you love being outside and getting your hands dirty? Garden Club might be the place for you! Children in grades Kindergarten and up and a participating adult are invited to join our Children's Library staff in planting and maintaining the library's Children's Garden. Children will learn about gardening, hear stories, and get hands-on experience planting, weeding, watering and otherwise maintaining the garden throughout the spring, summer, and into the fall. Friday, August 12 Cartoon Drawing with Emma, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Kids entering grades 3 - 6 are invited to join us in person for a cartoon drawing class with Emma Keating. Saturday, August 13 Tales to Tails, 11 a.m. to noon. ROAR's (Ridgefield Operation Animal Rescue) Therapy Dog Program will be bringing a therapy dog to be read to by children. The use of trained therapy dogs in reading programs can result in children who feel comfortable reading out loud, read more often, attempt more difficult books, and actually look forward to reading. As they improve their literacy skills, they're not just learning how to read, they're learning to love to read! Children must read independently to participate in this program. Registration required. Monday, August 15 Summer Nutmeg Book Discussion, 4 to 5 p.m. Rising 4th-6th graders can get ready for the Nutmeg award by discussing Katie the Catsitter by Colleen AF Venable and Stephanie Yue. When Katie gets a job catsitting for her mysterious upstairs neighbor, she doesn't realize she's in for the adventure of a lifetime. Could her neighbor really be a supervillain? Tuesday, August 16 Teddy Bear Picnic, 10:30 to 11 a.m. Children ages two and up and their families can come to the Library with their favorite Teddy bear or Lovey! We will sing songs and have stories about Teddies. Then we will finish up with a Teddy Bear Parade through the Children's Library. No registration required. Saturday, August 20 CT Poetry Society Workshop, 2 to 4 p.m. Please join us for the next CT Poetry Society workshop at the library. All that is required is the willingness to share some poetry that you have written by reading it aloud to the group. Poets should email a copy of their poems to Ray Rauth at rayrauth@optonline.net. He will distribute the poems to the group shortly before the session. To facilitate discussion, space is strictly limited to just 15 attendees. Registration is required.
