Wilton P&Z Warns Of Fake Invoices, Scam To Bilk Residents, Businesses
The elaborate scam targets residents and businesses who may have applications pending before the Planning and Zoning Department.
WILTON, CT — The Town of Wilton and the Wilton Police Department are warning residents about a scam to steal money from Wilton residents and businesses who may have applications pending before the Planning and Zoning Department.
In the scam, the victim receives a fake invoice, purportedly from the Town of Wilton, along with a letter demanding payment in order to complete an application before the Zoning Board of Appeals, according to a news release from The First Selectman's Office.
To make the correspondence look legitimate, the scammers have collected correct information from public sources, including the names of town employees and the correct names and addresses of Wilton residents, even using the addresses of properties these residents may own elsewhere.
