YMCA Back Open, Under Repair

The Y's executive director, Bob McDowell, offers patrons an apology for weather-related closures and says work is under way to fix damage.

To Our Valued Y Members,

As you probably know, this has been a very challenging week especially after the storm on March 13 for the Wilton Family Y with the deluge of rain we have experienced.  We sincerely apologize for being unable to provide the level of service we pledge to our members at all times.

Our LEAST favorite thing is to have to close the building and inconvenience our program participants, particularly those who have young children in classes.  But this was indeed the case on Monday and Tuesday when our parking lot became hazardous due to the high water level.  We were actually ordered to close on Monday by the Wilton Fire Marshal.

The Y's location on the flood plain with the Norwalk River running almost completely around the property makes our parking lots especially prone to flooding, which causes impassable conditions, major pothole damage and pavement erosion.

We are immediately cleaning up the lot, filling potholes and clearing drains.  Our Board of Directors has already authorized the Facilities Committee to obtain bids for permanent repairs and repaving so that this can be done over the coming weeks.  We are committed to completing the work and having the parking lot in good condition and ready for Spring classes and the busy Summer Camp season.  At the same time, the existing speed bumps will be converted to speed humps which will continue to calm the pace of traffic going through the lot but will be less jarring to vehicles.

We hope you understand that our decisions to close the Y over the past two days and on March 14 were made with safety at the forefront.  We are very mindful that we have a responsibility to parents and children alike to provide a safe, welcoming environment both inside and outside our building.  Your support for our Y is sincerely appreciated, and any comments or suggestions you may have for me on this or other issues are certainly encouraged.

As always thanks for your continued support of OUR Y.

-Bob McDowell, Executive Director
