WINDSOR, CT — Here are some recent notable accomplishments by local college students, as provided by readMedia Newswire.
Eastern Connecticut State University, Willimantic CT
- Fourteen student athletes from Eastern Connecticut State University received Little East Conference (LEC) awards in late March and April. The students represent six different teams and included three repeat winners. Among the awardees is Tristan Kijak of Windsor, who majors in Biology. Kijak, who received three LEC women's lacrosse Rookie-of-the-Week awards in April, has been a key component of the Warrior's success this season. The first-year sophomore leads Eastern with 47 ground balls and 27 goals, is second on the team with 27 caused turnovers and third with 33 points. She is 15-of-20 on free-position attempts.
- The Creative Writing Club at Eastern Connecticut State University published its annual literary journal, "Eastern Exposure," this spring. The student-produced journal showcases student writers and artists.
Among those published in the 2018 edition are a pair of students from Windsor. They are London Jones, who majors in Visual Arts and is featured in the artwork section of the journal, and Deirdre Volk, who majors in Pre-Early Childhood Education and Sociology and is also featured in the artwork section of the journal. - More than 1,000 Eastern Connecticut State University students volunteered more than 17,000 hours in the Windham area in the past academic year. On April 19, these students-and the projects and community partners they represent-were honored at the annual Service Expo and Awards, sponsored by Eastern's Center for Community Engagement. Among the expo presenters were two students from Windsor. Ayanna McDougald, who majors in Health Sciences, presented on her projects with the Ashford School Mentoring Program, Barrows STEM Academy After School Program, and Habitat for Humanity. Justin Smith, who majors in Finance, presented on his projects with the Barrows STEM Academy After School Program and Covenant Soup Kitchen.

- Emmanuel College student Paige Tambling of Windsor was recently inducted as an Associate Member into Beta Beta Beta, the national collegiate honor society for biology. Associate members are undergraduate students who have an interest in the life sciences, but do not yet qualify for Regular membership in the Honor Society.
