New Windsor 5-K Run & Walk will Help Feed Local Hungry Children
Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine Centers' Saturday, April 29 Windsor Event to Benefit Windsor Food & Fuel Bank

To celebrate the tenth anniversaries of both Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine Centers (PTSMC) of Windsor and the Windsor Food & Food Bank’s Weekend Wheels children’s food program, a first-ever “Race to the Weekend Wheels 5K Run & Walk” will be held on Saturday, April 29. The inaugural event will begin at 9 a.m. outside the new Weekend Wheels offices at 110 Addison Rd. in Windsor, Conn. Registration for the event is now open, with all proceeds going directly to the Weekend Wheels program.
“Windsor’s Weekend Wheels is a cause near and dear to the hearts of many within the community,” states Michael McGowan, Assistant Director of Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine Centers on 645 Poquonock Ave. “Over the past few years, Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine Centers in Windsor has become united with this student food insecurity program, and is a regular supporter, donating food every month that is contributed by our patients and our staff. It has been truly eye-opening to realize the number of children who require additional nourishment support in order to succeed in school and survive in life. Food insecure children have been found to have worse physical health outcomes, in addition to reduced cognitive and academic performance compared to their food secure peers.”
Weekend Wheels is a supplemental food program of the nonprofit Windsor Food & Fuel Bank. This 10-year-old children’s food program provides eligible local elementary and middle-school age girls and boys with a weekly food distribution, filled with healthy food and snack items. Many students who qualify to receive free or reduced school meals during the week may not receive sufficient nutrition when they are home on the weekends, and this program was created to help to fill that void.
