Windsor High 11th Annual Poetry Out Loud Final to be Held Jan 24

Twenty students will compete for the title of School Champion and the opportunity to represent Windsor in the state competition in March

The Windsor High School 11th Annual Poetry Out Loud Final will be held on Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at Windsor High School in the Auditorium from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. Twenty students will compete for the title of School Champion and the opportunity to represent Windsor in the state competition in March.

Now in its twelfth year nationally, Poetry Out Loud (POL) is an exciting program, presented by The Poetry Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, and various State Arts Agencies, which “invites the dynamic aspects of slam poetry, spoken word, and theater into the English class” (PoetryOutLoud.org). The program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage.

Throughout the Fall, participating teachers used the POL curriculum to teach poetry and public speaking. Students selected poems to memorize and master for classroom recitation contests. The winners of these contests, Class Champions, will advance to the school final. Performance judges for this year’s Finals are Bonnie Fineman, WPS Director of Arts and Humanities; Gaye Rizzo, Director of the Windsor Public Library; Kevin McGee, WHS Library Media Specialist; and Haley Boyer, 2014 graduate and former Poetry Out Loud finalist. Our accuracy judge is Phaedra Durost, WHS Assistant Principal.

The CT Poetry Out Loud competition will be held in March 2018. State champions receive a cash prize and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. to compete in the national competition in late April. In addition, the state champion’s school will receive a cash award for the purchase of poetry books.
