Windsor High Students Learn Valuable Health Care Lessons

St. Francis Hospital's "Let's Not Meet By Accident" Program encourages adolescents to make healthy choices in risky situations

More than fifty Windsor High School students taking teacher Dan Chrisis’s Introduction to Health Care classes attended the St. Francis Hospital’s “Let’s Not Meet By Accident” program on Thursday, November 1, 2018. This interactive, hands-on program is a comprehensive Community Outreach educational program that encourages adolescents to make “healthy choices in risky situations.”

The students enjoyed four exciting, educationally packed hours with a focus on the impact of distracted driving. The program began as students were whisked off to the Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center helipad on the roof in order to understand the purpose of Life Star in regards to saving lives.

Students also spent time in the Emergency Department Trauma Resuscitation Room and took part in a “mock” car accident. One student was chosen to play the role of a car crash victim and another played the role of a Trauma room nurse while two Trauma room nurses educated the students as to what procedures would take place in a real-life situation.

The nurses also passed around a large assortment of medical equipment for the students to examine. This was then followed by a presentation on organ donation.

Every student and chaperone earned a certificate from the American College of Surgeons Committee On Trauma’s Bleeding Control Basic v. 1.0 Course in which everyone learned how to pack a wound and apply a tourniquet to someone suffering a life threatening event. The program concluded with a question and answer period with hands-on exercises so that all were able to reflect their experience.
