Windsor Obituary: Eugene Menard, Jr., 87

Condolences to his family and friends.

Eugene "Red" W. Menard, Jr., 87, of Port Orange, FL, beloved husband of Christine (Budaj) Menard, entered eternal rest, with his loving wife of 20 years, Christine by his side, Friday, November 18, 2016.

Born in Sebago Lake, ME, son of the late Eugene W. and Martha (Manchester) Menard he was raised in Windsor and lived in Port Orange, FL since 2000. Red attended Windsor schools and was active in high school sports where he lettered in basketball, baseball, and soccer for three years. He served in the US Army for 6 years in Europe as a military police officer with the 43rd Infantry Division and in Korea as a Ranger in the 3rd Infantry Division, honorably discharged in 1954.

He returned to Windsor where he served on the Windsor Police Department from 1954; promoted to Sergeant in 1957; and left Windsor in 1967 to assume the position as the Chief of Police in Coventry before retiring. After his first move to Florida, he served as Lieutenant, Florida Wing, Civil Air Patrol where he participated in several search and rescue missions in the Florida Everglades. He was Chief of Security for Marco Island, FL; patrolman for the Marine Unit of the Police Department of North Miami, FL; and Deputy Sheriff of Collier County, FL.

In 1987, he returned to New England as Security Supervisor for the Nuclear Power Plant at Seabrook, NH and in 1994 was appointed Supervisor of Security at Wang Laboratories, Lowell, MA. Red was a life member of VFW Post 9990, Stafford Springs; and American Legion Post 400 Orlando, FL.

He leaves his wife and companion Christine (Budaj) Menard of 20 years of Port Orange, FL; his children, sons Michael of Old Saybrook, Steven of Portland, ME, and Eugene, III of Madison, NH; a daughter Sheryl of South Portland, ME; step daughter Marlene Oliveira of Windsor Locks, eight grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a step son Jeffrey Bonini formerly of Torrington.

His family will receive friends Thursday, Dec. 1, 2016 from 9 to 10:30 am at the Carmon Windsor Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Avenue, Windsor followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am at St. Gabriel's Church, 379 Broad Street, Windsor. Burial will follow with police and military honors at Windsor Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
