Broad Brook Fire Department Carnival Starts Tonight, East Windsor Historical Society Ice Cream Social in July
Five Things for Thursday.

1. Good morning Thursday, it will be sunny with a high temperature of 88 degrees, according to The Weather Channel. Tonight will be partly cloudy with a low temperature of 66 degrees.
2. The begins its annual carnival tonight at the corner of Routes 190 and 140. The department’s fundraiser runs through Saturday and includes a petting zoo, elephant and pony rides, games, and food.
The midway is being provided by R.W. Commerford & Sons. Fireworks will be on Friday around 9:30 p.m. The annual fire parade will be Saturday.

3. On This Day in: 1894, the U.S. Congress made Labor Day a national holiday; 1914, Archduke Francis Ferdinand and the Mrs. Archduke were assassinated by Serb nationalist in (what is now known as) Sarajevo, Bosnia; 1965, the first commercial satellite began communications service. It was Early Bird (Intelsat II); 1971, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the draft evasion conviction of Muhammad Ali; and 2000, six-year-old Elián González returned to Cuba from the U.S. with his father. The child had been the center of an international custody dispute.
4. The East Windsor Historical Society is having an from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on July 14 in the East Windsor Academy Museum, 115 Scantic Road..
5. The Windsor Locks American Legion Post is undertaking its annual flag selling campaign to promote the display of the national banner in the community. The campaign will continue through July 4.
The post will offer individual replacement flags and window or porch sets, all prices are slightly over cost.
The replacement flags can be of cotton or nylon in various sizes from 3’ by 5’ to 8’ by 12’. The porch set includes a 3’ by 5’ flag, a two or three piece metal pole, 5’’ gold eagle, steel bracket, and screws for mounting plus a brochure on flag display etiquette. Large in ground 17’ or 22’ steel flag pole sets are also available.
