EAST WINDSOR, CT — October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease. Beginning this Friday, the first day of the month, Broad Brook Pizza owner Bob Miner will be selling specially-made T-shirts, with all proceeds to be given to an area family or families affected by cancer.

The black T-shirts feature the shop's name in pink lettering, but the "I" in Pizza is replaced with a pink ribbon, the international symbol of breast cancer awareness. On the back of the shirt is a big pink ribbon bearing the slogan, "Big or small, save them all."

The passing of longtime friend Sue Janssen from the disease four years ago prompted Miner to decide to help. He opened the busy pizza shop in April, and plans to use that platform to promote breast cancer awareness.

"I have a great audience, a great customer base, and I think I can make a difference for somebody," he told Patch in an interview Monday. "So we're going to sell some shirts, twenty dollars a shirt, and whatever profit we get will be given to a local family."

Miner has placed an initial order for 250 shirts, but says the ultimate goal is to sell 700 by month's end.

"Maybe we'll sell so many that we'll be able to do multiple families," he said. "There's several different breast cancer things out there, but not all the money goes to them. I want to make a difference. I want those people that need money for rent."

The shirts are being produced by All The Way Clothing, a small store on Pearl Street in Enfield.

"I wanted something where somebody looks at the shirt and they go, 'Hey, man, this is a cool shirt, I'm going to wear this'," Miner said. "Not because of the logo, but because of the message."

Shirts are $20, and will be available beginning Friday at Broad Brook Pizza, 147 Main Street in the Broad Brook section of East Windsor.
