EAST WINDSOR, CT — East Windsor residents headed to the polls Tuesday for the 2016 midterm election. Polling places in East Windsor are now closed.
Preliminary indications pointed to a strong voter turnout in the town.
"It's been steady; it's good to see people voting," East Windsor Selectman Jason Bowsza said. "I think people are ready to see this particular election cycle come to a close. I'm hoping that whoever wins today will be a uniting factor and will actually be able to come together to get something positive done for the country."
In East Windsor, the race for the 3rd Senatorial District involves Democratic incumbent Timothy Larson and Republican challenger Carolyn Streeter Mirek. Larson is completing his first term. Mirek serves as Deputy Mayor of South Windsor.
In the 57th State House District, three-term Republican incumbent Christopher Davis is running unopposed.
In the 59th State House District, three-term Democratic incumbent David Kiner is not seeking re-election. The candidates are Democrat Anthony DiPace, former chairman of the Enfield Planning and Zoning Commission, and Republican Carol Hall, a member of the Enfield Town Council.
The candidates for president and vice president are Republicans Donald Trump and Mike Pence, Democrats Hillary Clinton and Tim Kaine, Libertarians Gary Johnson and Bill Weld, and Green Party Jill Stein and Ajamu Baraka.
Christopher Cabrera, a registered independent voter who recently moved from New Hampshire to East Windsor, told Patch he "almost didn't vote for president."
"I'm definitely conflicted in my views, but I believe it is most beneficial to really start from the ground up - local jobs, local economy, small business," Cabrera said. "From the state level, that's how we're going to build up to the New England and national levels. That's really how we're going to have our businesses thrive. Right now, I'm more apromoter of less taxes and less regulation - let's help the average person, not the big companies."
For United States Senate, the candidates are Democratic incumbent Richard Blumenthal, Republican Dan Carter, Libertarian Richard Lion and Green Party Jeffery Russell.
For United States Congress, the choice is between Democratic incumbent John Larson, Republican Matthew Corey and Green Party candidate S. Michael DeRosa.
