Subject: Community Review of Windsor Locks Public Schools Facility Study

On Monday, September 12, 2016, we will be holding the Community Meeting to review and gather input for the WLPS Facilities study, from 7-8:30pm, in the Windsor Locks High School Cafeteria. This is a community-wide opportunity to help guide the process towards the best result for our current students and future generations. The September 12th meeting is the last opportunity to get together with other members of the community to provide input on the future use of our facilities.

This past spring, members of the community engaged in a conversation about the future use of the Windsor Locks Public School buildings led by Drummey, Rosane, and Anderson, the firm selected to conduct a facilities study for the school district. The firm explained their findings during the data collection portion of the study, and officially kicked off the involvement of community input during the April 25th meeting.

After a presentation by the study’s leaders, a discussion was held regarding the possible options and configurations of the school buildings to meet student needs, district goals, and address anticipated maintenance, renovation, and other functional considerations. The following questions were considered:

• Should we add on to North Street School? (where we are at capacity)

• Should we close a school? (since our enrollment has decreased, but is projected to remain flat over the next decade)

• Should we consider creating two elementary schools that both serve grades PK-5?

• How can we provide full-day free PreK for all eligible children? (at present, we only provide half-day)

Immediately prior to this meeting, we will be holding a “ribbon-cutting” ceremony to mark the completion of the High School Windows Renovation Project!

Please join us for this very important meeting. For more information, please contact Kristen Wiegand, kwiegand@wlps.org.
