WINDSOR LOCKS, CT — For just the second time in its 83-year existence, a Windsor Locks-based credit union has changed its name, to reflect "its proximity and connection to the Connecticut River, and also the fact that it is open to all people throughout Hartford County."

Windsor Locks Federal Credit Union has officially changed its name to Riverbank Federal Credit Union. The new moniker was celebrated at its Spring Street office Monday at a reception with state treasurer Erick Russell, First Selectman Paul Harrington and numerous credit union officials and members.

A new logo reflects both the Connecticut River and the Windsor Locks heritage, with blue representing the river and green evoking memories of Pine Meadow, the town’s original name. The green in the logo also represents upwards arrows, signifying the credit union’s growth into the future.

The credit union was established in 1940 as St. Mary’s Windsor Locks Parish Federal Credit Union, created to serve the parishioners of St. Mary’s Church in Windsor Locks. In 1979, the credit union charter was changed to allow more people in Hartford County to join, and the name was changed to Windsor Locks Federal Credit Union.

"We wanted a name that is simple and not geographically limiting - we wanted it to be welcoming and reflective of our cooperative's heritage," credit union president/CEO Charla Stetson said.

Credit union members were notified of the pending name change earlier this month, and Stetson said response has been quite positive. The institution’s new website will be www.RiverbankFCU.com. Those trying to reach the old address will be automatically forwarded, and member online banking login information will not change.

"What an amazing day for Riverbank Credit Union and our members," Stetson said "This name was chosen to better reflect this open membership opportunity, and our board of directors and management believed this name will support our future growth of our membership. Everything else stays the same - our staff, our products, our member account numbers and, most important, our commitment to those we serve."

Stetson said there will be no need for members to order new debit cards, credit cards or checks, and Riverbank Federal Credit Union’s routing number will not change.

"We will measure our success the way we always have, by how much we give back to our members, staff and the communities we serve," board of directors chair Jason Cutler said. "We value our heritage, as is reflected in the new name and logo, and we know our success will be greater as we continually improve in all of these areas of member service and commitment."
