WINDSOR LOCKS, CT — The community has shown an outpouring of support for a family that recently lost their home in a fire in which a pet guinea pig died. The boy, a second-grader, also lost his beanie baby collection.

Kathy Ryan posted a story on Facebook about how the boy's classmates helped him out: "The other kids knew how much that he loved those beanie babies, so without being told, they brought in a collection of 28 new beanie babies and money from their piggy banks."

They are also raising money for the family by opening a refreshment stand.

The Windsor Locks Police Department and its union raised money for the family to buy a new guinea pig.

"We knew of the guinea pig succumbing to the fire and again we wanted to help put a smile on her son’s face," the department wrote on its Facebook page. "To see him smile was priceless for all of us. While this will not restore their loss we hope it provides a small measure of comfort and positive vibes as they rebuild their lives."
