Pomperaug Art Work Showcased During Youth Art Month

Youth Art Month celebrated in region 15

Region 15 schools is observing Youth Art Month again this year with the display of local student art work at Southbury Public Library through the month of March.

Youth Art Month is a month of promoting art and art education in the United States. It is observed in March, with thousands of schools participating nationwide. The annual observance emphasizes the value of art education for all children and encourages support for quality school art programs.

Each year, Region 15 selects a different school to display its student art. This year, art from Pomperaug High School will be hung in the Southbury Public Library gallery.

Some of the art pieces have recently received accolades at the Annual Connecticut Regional Scholastic Art Awards competition and exhibition, sponsored by the Connecticut Art Education Association.

“We are so proud to showcase selected art from PHS students who are enrolled in such classes as Design, Drawing/Painting, Photography, and Advanced Placement Studio Art,” said Mrs. Jane Sarjeant, Region 15 Director of Fine Arts. “The community will see the quality, concentration, and breadth of experience that our art students have put forth.”

Region 15 is proud to have collaborated with the Southbury Public Library for over twenty years, displaying creative art work and photography during Youth Art Month.

“Art education develops self-esteem, appreciation of the work of others, self-expression, cooperation with others, and creative and critical thinking skills--skills vital to our children’s growth,” said Mrs. Sarjeant. “We are very grateful to the Southbury Library for allowing us to have an art gallery there during Youth Art Month. I encourage all the residents to stop by and view the wonderful pieces.”
